VIC 5 in Grigny Gustavo Picone brought a new title to Octogen Team Luzern with his victory at VIC 5 held in Grigny, France on 28 April 2012. The tournament brought together the creme of French grapplers and Gustavo's way to victory required fine tactics and strong determination. He won his first fight over Rais Kalad (NR Fight) who got disqualified for fleeing the mat while being caught in an armbar. Gustavo then faced the challenger, Samuel Judes (Pythagore), winner of last year's edition and silver medallist at the 2010 European Championship. Gustavo was saved by the bell and won by 1 point, as Samuel managed to place a tight rear naked choke 5 seconds before the end of the match. Read the Full Story
Gustavo World Champion BJJ Black Belt Gustavo Picone represented Brazil and Octogen Team at the FILA World Grappling Championship that took place in Belgrade (SRB) from 29 September till 01 October 2011. Gustavo had a slow start in the No-Gi competition where he lost his first match by points to the Pole Kamil Mitosek. He ended up taking the 11th place as he was not on the repechage line and could not get back into the competition. On the second day, he entered the Gi competition determined to win and he made his way up to the final starting with a bye at the first round and continuing with a victory over the Serbian representative, Uros Domanovic, who later brought the bronze to his country. 2011 Swiss Jiu Jitsu Octogen Team Luzern entered the 3rd International Swiss Jiu Jitsu Championship that was held in Morges (SUI) on 17-18 September 2011. The first day of competition was dedicated to white and blue belts and counted a fair amount of competitors from Switzerland, Brazil, France, Portugal, Spain, and Poland. White belt Reto Muff represented the team for the first time and unfortunately lost his match by points, although making his coach very proud of his first performance. Blue belt Milena Hammer Rocha brought two silver medals to the team in 58.5kg and open weight category. Timon Schürmann also had a good tournament and won silver in his 70kg blue belt division. Kombat Komplett 4 Four MMA fighters represented Octogen Team Vevey in the 4th edition of Kombat Komplett that took place in Baumholder (GER) on 04 June 2011. The event attracted a vast public of MMA fanatics, formed in majority by American soldiers who are based in the U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder. Our fighters rocked the place with 3 wins in round 1 and one loss in round 2. Gregory Durin showed great grappling skills as he swept Lucas Holloway and pounded him until the American gave his back and couldn't escape from Gegory's rear-naked choke. Read the Full Story
2011 Swiss No-Gi Cup Gustavo Picone and Milena Hammer Rocha represented Octogen Team Luzern at the Swiss No-Gi Cup that took place in Meyrin (Geneva) on 25 June 2011. Gustavo won the 79kg advanced division and confirmed his leading position in Switzerland after having dominated the FILA Grand Prix in Martigny, the Mata Leao Challenge in Lucerne, and the Swiss ADCC Championship in Liestal earlier this year. Gustavo deafeated all his opponents by submission, except for the open-weight final that he lost to Patrick De Caro by referee's decision. Milena Hammer Rocha also performed very well and made third in women's open weight division. ADCC 2011 After having won the FILA Grand Prix in Martigny and the Mata Leao Challenge in Lucerne earlier this month, Gustavo Picone (Head of Octogen Team Luzern) continued his quest for the gold at the Swiss ADCC Championship that took place in Liestal on 04 June 2011. Gustavo won the 77kg category by defeating Alfred Sutter (Frota Team Nogueira) by armbar, Nenad Kokeza (Fight Gym Aarau) by points, and finally Marcello dos Santos (Icon Jiu Jitsu Team) in the final. FILA Grand Prix 2011 7 members of Octogen Team Vevey and Luzern competed in the 1° FILA Grand Prix held in Martigny on 7-8 May 2011. Gustavo Picone distinguished himself throughout the tournament by winning the 80kg category in Gi and No-Gi grappling and by making 3rd at the absolute Gi tournament. He defeated Maciej Glabus (POL), renowned member of the Berserkers Team, in both Gi and No-Gi finals and was only stopped on his way to his third gold medal by Piotr Baginski, national coach of the Polish Grappling Team and owner of the Berserkers Team.  Read the Full Story

Shooto Switzerland Finals

The Shooto Switzerland Finals took place in Zürich on 11 December 2012. After having qualified at the three qualifying rounds, two members of Octogen Team Vevey, Maykol Herrera and Samuel Tischhauser, travelled to Zürich to fight for the Swiss title in their respective category. Maykol Herrera unfortunately lost by arm lock at the first round and became vice-champion in 65kg. Samuel Tischhauser beated his opponent by decision and won the Swiss title in 76kg. That was a great victory over a more experienced opponent who had won all his former matches by KO. Congratulations to both of them for their performance!

 

7th Jorge Martins' Memorial

The young and promising Berset Brothers, Thomas in 76kg and Simon in 61kg, represented Octogen Team Vevey at the 7th Jorge Martins' Memorial that was be held in Martigny (SUI) on 05 November 2011. Thomas created a stir by winning over Ramos Ribeiro (Gracie Barra Geneva) by technical knockout in the first round, while Simon disputed a hard fight that ended by unanimous decision in favour of his opponent, Daniel Kostic (MMA Sion/Icon). 

Both Berset Brothers made their coaches very proud and receive our warm congratulations!

 

Swiss Fight Night 3

sfn3_baselCongratulations to the two fighters who represented Octogen Team Vevey at Swiss Fight Night 3 that took place in Basel on 01 October 2011. Jerôme Pittet (66kg) was crowned champion of the amateur Swiss Fighting League after beating Sani Osseiran (Gracie Barra Geneva) by guillotine choke at the beginning of the second round. The young Loïc Gerber (70kg) who disputed his first amateur fight against Ramos Ribeiro (Gracie Barra Geneva), gave a great performance but did not manage to surpass his more experienced opponent and lost by decision (20-18, 20-18, 19-19). His coaches and teammates are very proud of his debut fight and congratulate both opponents! Gregory Durin (84kg) was the only one on the pro card, but his fight could not take place due to last-minute cancellation of his opponent. 

Many thanks to all supporters who contributed to see the first belt being brought back to Vevey!
